Our customer on this product was a renowned Manhattan designer that specialized in esoteric applications that used advanced composites materials in unique ways. The primary challenge here was to develop an exterior automotive component with cosmetic and structural attributes worthy of the exclusive Porsche Cayman sports car. Most of the innovation here went into the tooling and the preforming methods used to stabilize the carbon fabric during the Resin Transfer Molding process (RTM) and ensure a class A finish. GCi had to break new ground in tooling materials and surfaces and apply its proprietary preforming process in order to successfully develop this robust and high-production process.
