For this project we worked closely with a specialty resin supplier and a 3-dimensional braiding house to develop a prototype engine intake valve that was targeted to be half the weight of the incumbent titanium design. Our job was to develop the multi-step resin transfer molding process that was used throughout the pyrolizing process with the end result being a 3D carbon fiber/silicon carbide matrix product. The partnership was successful - with several preliminary trials, but the project never saw the light of day. Once the governing body learned of the project it was ruled the valve would be illegal for racing.
